Phalaenopsis spp.
Sometimes called "moth orchid" because the exotic flowers resemble moths dancing on the wind.
The blooms come in many different colours, are extremely long-lasting (several months), and can appear at any time of year.
Considered the easiest orchid for beginners.
Pet-friendly!
Care:
Light: Bright, indirect (north or east window); leaves will scorch if exposed to hot afternoon sun.
Water: Allow the potting mix to dry to the point that it is just barely damp between watering, then water thoroughly. Avoid overwatering; when in doubt, don't water.
Fertilizer: Use an orchid fertilizer such as Jack's 30-10-10 according to package instructions.
Other tips: Requires seasonal and diurnal changes in temperature to rebloom; position near a window or try moving to a cooler room if plants fail to rebloom. Plants should be potted into undersized containers in which the roots fit snuggly; use an orchid mix such as Orchiata Power or Willgro General Mix.
